Playfair, Pathfinder & St. Lawrence II

Sail Training Adventures with the Brigantines

  • It was great to have Brigantines, St. Lawrence II, TS Playfair, & STV Pathfinder return to RWF for 2016.  These youth sail training ships were docked in Harbour Square Park for deck tours, sailaways and a fun inner harbour race on Friday and Saturday afternoon.
  • A brigantine is a two-masted square-rigged sailing vessel with fore-and-aft rigged sails on the mainmast. This is distinct from a brig that has square sails on both masts. The name comes from the Italian word brigantino meaning a pirate ship and was associated with the vessels favoured by them in the Mediterranean.
  • Brigantine Inc. operates St. Lawrence II out of Kingston, Ontario, and was custom built to act as a platform for personal development. The ship was built in 1953 in Kingston by Francis MacLachlan.
  • Toronto Brigantine Inc. operates Pathfinder and Playfair, which were also designed and built by Francis A. McLachlan in Kingston as sail training vessels and were built in 1963 and 1974 respectively. TS Playfair has also been christened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II!
  • All three ships are designed similarly, with the mandate to empower, connect and inspire youth through the challenges of sail training a traditionally rigged ship. Both organizations are dedicated to building character and a sense of responsibility, and forging friendships and teamwork.
  • The sail training programs broaden horizons and inspire youth to be a positive force in the world. Through experiential learning and skills development, the programs build confidence, strength, and leadership in the ships’ crews.
  • Brigantine Inc. and TBI are also committed to preserving rare maritime skills and heritage, promoting respect for our natural environment, and providing the training and experience required to become an outstanding professional mariner.
